College Football Predictions for Week Five

It’s really not a great matchup of Top 25 teams this weekend. In fact, there are only three of those matchups, but we’ll break them down for you.

The Big 12 has seven of their ten teams in the Top 25, so clearly is the deepest conference from top to bottom, and two of the three top matchups this week involve teams in the Big 12.

Baylor travels to Morgantown for the Mountaineers first game in their new conference and after talking about it, we think West Virginia should easily beat the Bears. But in BU’s favor, there may not be a conference team who would survive this historic trip, as WVU players and fans are excited to finally be a part of quality conference with top opponents…and now they are. Neither team has a world beater defense, but both can put up points in a hurry, and we say WVU wins 45-24. 

In the other top Big 12 matchup, resurgent Texas travels to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State. We think J.W. Walsh will be the quarterback for the Cowboys, after Lunt’s knee injury two weeks ago. And to be honest this may be a tougher matchup for the Horns defense, with a QB who can run or pass. Yes, UT supposedly has the best defene in the conference, but that’s like being the fastest bicyclist in a NASCAR race, and they did give up over 400 yards of offense to a mediocre (at best) Ole Miss squad two weeks ago. Both of these teams will score, and it’ll probably be the first one to hit 35. That being said, we’ll give the Pokes the win 42-38, but that’s only because it’s in Stillwater.

Ohio State can’t win their conference, or go bowling, so Urban Meyer has his Buckeyes thinking of every game as a bowl. Now we can’t get to excited about any bowl in East Lansing, Michigan, but maybe Ohio State will this Saturday. Meyer’s squad has been underwhelming so far this season in their wins, and escaped Cal two weeks ago, but there is a reason they hire Meyer away from retirement, and we expect the Bucs to come out with their hair on fire in this game over an overrated Sparty. Buckeyes win 28-20.
