Notre Dame, Florida State have chance to make national noise
Notre Dame is off to a 3-0 start and coming off an impressive win at Michigan State, but the Spartans’s best win this season came against a Boise State team that is beyond scuffling on offense. Florida State is scoring touchdowns almost every time you blink, but they have been far from tested this season. These two teams will each get a chance to silence any critics or doubters with huge home games this weekend.
Notre Dame will host the Michigan Wolverines, who have now found some offense after a season one flattening by Alabama. For the Irish it is a chance to prove that their good start and seemingly improved defense is legitimate, as well as pick up some revenge after a tough pill to swallow last season in Ann Arbor. Florida State plays one of the top game son the ACC calendar this weekend when they host the defending ACC champion Clemson Tigers, who have been no slouch themselves and now have Sammy Watkins back on the field.
To say these games come at crucial junctures for each school is an understatement. The Seminoles entered the season with lofty expectations and national title whispers around Tallahassee, but they have a recent knack of falling flat at some point. Against Clemson they will face a team capable and likely to punch back and how Florida State handled that could tell us whether or not these Seminoles are capable of making a run. Notre Dame still needs to prove they can sustain good play for one more week. Can they find a way to slow down Denard Robinson, the most versatile offensive player they have faced yet, enough to move to 4-0? If they do, people will be talking as the Irish and Seminoles will each be back in the top ten next week, with a chance at realistic actual national importance, for the first time since perhaps 1993, when the two faced off in South Bend as the top two teams in the country.
They have each been in the top ten at the same time a couple times since, but it has been a long time since both looked like a realistic player in the national championship picture. They may not be there yet, even after this week, but they are worth keeping a close eye on.
