With the Big 12 hiring new Bob Bowlsby last week, speculation has ramped up on who the conference might add on for the 2013 football season.

Despite what he might say, Bowlsby and the conference will add teams, as with the new ESPN and Fox TV deals there is a financial incetive to not only add TV markets, but to get back to at least twelve teams and a conference title game to add even more TV revenue…not to mention the new BCS will virtually demand it.

The one team that has pretty much been a done deal to move conferences is Louisville, and that has never waned. When WVU leapfrogged the Cardinals last fall to jump from the Big East to the Big 12, UL was given a promise that they’d be next…which is why Sen. Mitch McConnell didn’t make such a public fuss, despite being out front lobbying for Louisville prior to the decision.

Who will join UL for the first two of possibly more teams to leave a BCS conference for the Big 12?

As of today it appears more likley it could be Florida State, and the Seminoles want out of the ACC so badly they can taste it…and they aren’t the only ACC school to want out, as the basketball oriented conference could lose Clemson and Virginia Tech as well to either the SEC, Big 12 or Big Ten. The biggest problem the conference faces is that it is extremely basketball heavy in a world that is all about football TV dollars.

As of today the top two picks from the crystal ball (no pun intended) would be Louisville and Florida State, but these things change rapidly…we’ll keep you advised on the site and on the Greg Swaim Show.

This surely had to give the stoic Paul Finebaum a reason to grin at least a little bit.

Finebaum, who left Baylor’s Robert Griffin III off of his Heisman Trophy ballot last season and told the haters to get a clue, is a notorious advocate of SEC football. So it must have been music to his ears to see what happened Thursday night as the NFL Draft was getting underway in New York City? Why? Because SEC defense was the key to the 2012 NFL Draft for RG3′s new NFC East division rivals.

The Washington Redskins had already been placed in the second-overall pick after a previous trade with the St. Louis Rams for the draft, with full intentions of drafting their new franchise quarterback, the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback who changed the Baylor football program in to a household name. With the Redskins picking up one of the top quarterbacks in the draft (Andrew Luck was selected first overall by the Indianapolis Colts), NFC East rivals were making moves to draft up and get stronger on defense.

First the Dallas Cowboys made a move in to the top ten to draft LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne, who will be expected to limit the success of RG3′s pass attempts at least two times a year. The Philadelphia Eagles also made a move up in the draft, trading in to the 1th overall spot to draft defensive tackle Fletcher Cox from Mississippi State. In time, Cox will be looked to as a defensive force bringing pressure and disrupting RG3 in the backfield two times a year. Is it a coincidence that Washington’s two NFC East rivals moved up to draft defensive players from the SEC? Maybe slightly, but it is probably still something Finebaum would approve of, even though neither team took a player from his Alabama Crimson Tide.

There were four Alabama players chosen in the first round of course. Running back Trent Richardson was picked third overall by the Cleveland Browns, who also later moved back in to the first round to draft Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden. Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy tweeted a welcome to Richardson. He may not be as thrilled to see Weeden being added to the roster as a first-round pick.

On the Show Today

This week on the podcast we took a look at the Arkansas head coaching situation one more time. With the Razorbacks hiring former Bobby Petrino assistant John L. Smith there were a number of reactions on both sides of the decision. Some loved the move while others scratched their heads and suggested Arkansas athletics director Jeff Long was crazy. I certainly found myself on the positive side of the move, suggesting that it was a smart decision for the 2012 season, but I brought on one of the guys from Crystal Ball Run for a different take. Aaron Torres joined me on the podcast this week for a little back and forth on the Arkansas coaching hire, and we replay the interview on today’s show. I also touch on the latest BCS news with a new plan ready to unfold in 2014 and the top picks in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Bobby Petrino will live to coach another day, but how soon will he be back on the sideline for a big time program?

Quite frankly, I’m not sure.

Petrino was removed as head coach at Arkansas this week, almost a week and a half after he was involved in a motorcycle accident, which we eventually found out was also tied to another woman Petrino was trying to hide from not only his family, but also his athletic director Jeff Long. After Long had already released a statement about Petrino’s accident following a conversation with Petrino, Long had to make a tough decision to place Petrino on administrative leave and eventually come to the decision to answer calls for Petrino’s job.

Petrino was not fired for putting the Arkansas program in any NCAA danger, and his coaching abilities were never really questioned. Instead, what will keep Petrino from returning to the big stage of the power conferences will be his personality and all of the baggage that comes with it.

To put it simply, Petrino is a slime ball. And nobody likes slime.

This is a man who interviewed for another job in the dark of night while a program was still employing a head coach. This is a man who accepted a job as a head coach in the NFL and quit on his team toward the end of a dismal season, and there is no other way to spin that. None. At Arkansas things were rolling smoothly for Petrino. The Razorbacks had elevated to be mentioned among the SEC elite, reaching a BCS game for the first time in the BCS era (losing to Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, a game itself marred by NCAA sanctions in Columbus), and entering the 2012 season largely considered a team capable of making a run in the SEC and perhaps at the BCS championship.

Will Arkansas survive without Petrino? All things considered, yes, but losing Petrino will be a significant loss. The Razorbacks still have one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC with Tyler Wilson and Knile Davis expected to return at tailback, so this will still be a pretty strong team in the SEC. If Arkansas can find ways to get past Alabama and LSU, then watch out.

This team could still be in store for a fun ride in 2012, and we’re not talking about motorcycle rides either.

Now that the Final Four is over conference realignment is back on the front burner.

What we know is that conference realignment is not dead, but what is less certain are which teams will leave their conferences for greener pastures…and which conference will they leave for?

BYU and Notre Dame don’t have to leave a conference at all, which is a big savings for them if they do join one (just ask West Virginia how much it costs for a quickie divorce), and the two power independents like their freedom, but the new BCS will almost certainly dictate they join one if they want to compete at the national level in football.

Of course the Irish are indy in football, but have been competiting in the Big East in other sports. If you’ve been paying attention though, the Big East is the big loser in the power conference realignment wars, as they’ve already lost West Virginia, and soon will lose Syracuse and Pitt…but that may be just the beginning, as Louisville, Cincinnati, UConn and Rutgers are hearing from other BCS conferences, and the Mountaineers have set the precedent with their big buyout to jump immediately to the Big 12.

Big East fans reading this will want to point out the number of new additions they’ve had, but they’ve all been from non-BCS conferences…and that spells small time in a big way.

The ACC is not immune from being raided either, as there has been significant talks between the Big 12 and Florida State and Clemson, and there have been stories that Virginia Tech and Maryland might like to bolt as well. The problem with the ACC is similar to the Big East, in that it is a basketball conference, and realignment is all about football and TV markets.

The Big 12 should be naming a new commisioner in the next month or so, and it may not take long for them to make a formal bid to no less than two schools, and possibly as many as four. The smart money is on BYU, Louisville, Clemson and Florida State, and likely in that order, but there could be others, and depending on how aggressive the new commish is, don’t be surprised if Notre Dame gets a call as well, even though they’re smack in the middle of Big Ten territory.

The Irish are obviously the most coveted prize out there, for their historic football program, but they’ve always been independent. The new BCS will almost certainly change the way the Irish think on this topic, but I don’t see them acting right away…and like the hot cheerleader, they’ll have plenty of offers.

The SEC may add two more teams eventually, but they’ll almost certainly look into TV markets which they don’t already have. And this would virtually eliminate Florida State and Clemson if they decide to jump. Possibilities for new markets would be in the states of North Carolina and Virginia, so we’ll be watching any possible moves there as well.

Stay tuned, as when the Big 12 gets their man, we are hearing things could move quickly.

A total of 35 universities recorded a profit of at least $1 million by their respective athletic departments in the last fiscal year, according to a recent report by Business of College Sports. Alabama took the top prize with a profit of nearly $31.7 million, with Penn State not far behind with a $31.6 million profit.

Texas, as you might have already suspected, was the leader when it came to Big 12 schools. The Longhorns, always strong when it comes to money, added the Longhorn Network and saw a Big 12-leading profit of $24.3 million, fourth highest in the nation (Michigan is third with roughly $26.6 million). Kansas State ‘s $23.4 million was next in line among all universities, not just the Big 12. Oklahoma State was ninth in the nation (third among Big 12 members) in the profit rankings with $14.36 million to show.

But just because schools are showing big profits, does not necessarily mean they are not big spenders. Texas spent more money on athletics last year than any school in the country, with over $125 million spent. The Longhorns also showed the nation’s largest revenue, with $150 million. Ohio State was second in the nation, with $113 million spent and $131.8 in revenue. Oklahoma spent over $96 million and Texas A&M spent $71.7 million.

Thirteen SEC schools (and we’re including Texas A&M and Missouri now) recorded a profit, with Ole Miss being the lone exception. Perhaps this is why Ole Miss hired a new athletics director this week? In the Big Ten two programs failed to record a profit (Minnesota and Northwestern. The Big 12 and ACC each had eight programs net a profit, while the Pac 12 had seven programs in the black. Among BCS AQ conferences only the Big East managed to see less than half of the conference’s football membership net a profit. For what it is worth, West Virginia was not one of the profitable Big East programs reported (UConn, Louisville, Notre Dame, Syracuse).

Which brings up the question once more. If the Big 12 is going to expand and return to twelve members, what would serve as the best candidates? You would think that money-making athletic programs would be the best option. Louisville and Notre Dame were the bread winners in the Big East (yes, we know Notre Dame is a football independent), and certainly those have been two schools often linked to potential Big 12 expansion.

TV markets matter, but money talks.

On the Show Today

We continue to take a look around the nation as spring football opens up. Today we talk to Hamilton Riley, Editor In Chief of Lambeth Field, to discuss the Virginia Cavaliers and where they fit in to the ACC picture. We are also joined by one of the nation’s top Class of 2013 recruits, tight end Adam Breneman.

The Temple Owls joined the Big East this week. Again.

I wanted to be sure to discuss the topic a little more because we didn’t quite get a chance to do so on today’s No 2-Minute Warning show on the Big Time Network.

The Big East extended an invitation to Temple to join the conference as a full league-member, which really is a significant step forward for the Philadelphia program. Is the Big East what it once was? Of course not, but do not be so quick to dismiss the conference now. The potential for it to be an entertaining conference moving forward is pretty solid, with Boise State, Houston, SMU and Temple joining next fall (as well as others), and Navy set to join in 2015.

I am by no means suggesting that these moves make the Big East that much closer to becoming nationally prominent the way the SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten are, but it does ensure they will be likely to stay ahead of the likes of the impending Conference USA-Mountain West Conference combination, probably.

So, what is next for the Big East?

Commissioner John Marinatto said he and the conference would be well suited and open to the possible negotiations to allow Pittsburgh and Syracuse to wiggle out of the 27-month waiting period, so they may join the ACC starting in 2013. The Big East feels they have a somewhat stable football membership that would be in position to lose two more schools without having to juggle and scramble around too much once the new members are brought in. The Big East will have 12 football members in 2012, with divisions likely to be split in to some sort of East-West fashion. My suggestion, for now, with division names of Colonial and Frontier:

Frontier

Colonial

Boise State

Connecticut

Houston

Cincinnati

Louisville

Central Florida

Memphis

Rutgers

San Diego St.

South Florida

SMU

Temple

When Navy joins the conference in 2015 they can slide in to the Colonial Division. The Big East has their eyes set on a western partner, which would make sense to move in to the Frontier Division as well. Air Force? BYU? Either would fit nicely in to the conference’s western foot print at that point.

But one other thing that was brought up Wednesday was the possibility of Villanova following through on moving up to the FBS ranks. The Big East has committed some financial resources to help out with the process if needed, and will waive any conference or NCAA entrance fees in order to add Villanova football to the Big East. Without getting in to a discussion on the pros and cons of Villanova once again toying with the idea, for now let’s assume Villanova DOES make the jump.

They would need to make the decision by July 1, 2013, so they may officially begin their transition to the FBS. The ideal situation, if Villanova moves up, would be for the Big East to have it worked out so the Wildcats could join the conference in 2015, when Navy joins, to keep membership as equal as possible on the football field until then. In that case, Villanova and Navy would both be best suited in the Colonial Division, which means

So here’s what those divisions could, in theory, look like:

Frontier

Colonial

Boise State

Connecticut

Cincinnati

Central Florida

Houston

Navy

Louisville

Rutgers

Memphis

South Florida

San Diego St.

Temple

SMU

Villanova
